Hear what your family is actually saying

Most people wait about seven years before they do anything about their hearing. By then they have stopped going to the things they used to enjoy. It does not have to go that way, and finding out where you stand takes one appointment.

The problem

It does not feel like deafness. It feels like everyone mumbles.

Hearing usually goes in the high frequencies first. Those are the consonants. You still hear that someone is talking, you just cannot tell what they said.

So the volume on the television creeps up. You start picking the quiet end of the restaurant. You nod along in a group and hope you were not asked a question.

Eventually it is easier to stay home. That is the part that matters, and it is the part nobody books an appointment about.

Poojitha Bontu, Clinical Audiologist and owner of Candid Hearing

Who you will see

Pooja spent a decade inside a hearing aid chain. Then she left.

She qualified in 2009 with a Masters in Speech Pathology and Audiology, came to Australia in 2011, and has been a full member of the Australian College of Audiology since 2012.

Most of that career was spent working for a large corporate provider. The clinical work was good. The part that wore thin was being handed targets for a particular manufacturer's devices in a particular quarter.

Candid Hearing exists so that the person testing your hearing has no reason to recommend anything except the thing that will work. She takes no commission from any manufacturer. If the entry-level aid is right for you, that is what she will say.

Real Ear Measurement, every fitting

A probe microphone in your ear canal measures what the aid is actually delivering to your eardrum, and the aid is adjusted to match your prescription. Not every clinic does this step.

A two-hour first appointment

History, full diagnostic testing, your results explained on screen while you are sitting there, and a written report to your GP.

The plan

Three steps, and you can stop after any of them

If you need aids, ninety days of support

Fitted with Real Ear Measurement, then check-ins at weeks 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12. Hearing aids do not work on day one. They work once they are tuned to your life.

Hearing, tinnitus and balance, in one place

The Clear Life Program

We will name the result we are accountable for

Every hearing aid retailer in the country offers a trial period. A window in which you can change your mind. None of them will tell you what the aids are supposed to achieve.

So here is ours, in two parts.

Days 1 to 30. No questions asked.

Not happy, for any reason at all? Bring them back for a full refund. You do not have to explain yourself and you will not be talked out of it.

Days 31 to 60. The Partner Test.

Wear them every day. If the people who live with you cannot notice a clear difference by day 60, you get every cent back. They are the ones who have been repeating themselves. They will know.

Waiting is not free, even though it feels like it

Hearing loss is usually gradual, which is exactly why people put it off. But the ear is only half of it. Sound processing happens in the brain, and the parts that handle speech get less practice the longer the signal is missing.

Untreated hearing loss in mid-life is recognised internationally as one of the largest modifiable risk factors for dementia, and it is associated with a higher risk of falls and with social isolation. That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason not to leave it another two years.

What patients say

Thirty-two reviews. Every one of them five stars.

These are real reviews left on Google. We have not edited them, and audiology is not regulated the way dentistry is, so we are allowed to show you what people actually said.

I have visited Candid Hearing twice now and found Pooja very knowledgeable and efficient. More than that she offers the very important personal experience. As an independent Audiologist she is not out to sell you the most expensive items. In fact she talked me down to the base model Hearing aids (Govt supported) and as a pensioner this is very important to me.

My 80 year old mother was referred to Candid Hearing by her GP. We were with Poojitha for 2 hours for testing. She explained every step of the process and was extremely thorough. She was very kind and patient with my mum. We were provided with a comprehensive report which was sent to the GP within 2 days.

My appointment with independent audiologist Pooja was excellent. Pooja’s attention to detail was clear and informative. Compared to other companies e.g. Amplifon I highly recommend POOJA.

Common questions

Questions people ask us

How much does a hearing test cost?

If you are a pensioner or a DVA card holder, your test and often your hearing aids are fully covered under the Australian Government Hearing Services Program, and Pooja is a registered provider. If you are paying privately, ask when you call and you will be told the figure before you book. Nobody should turn up not knowing what it costs.

How long does an appointment take?

A full diagnostic assessment runs about two hours. That is longer than most places, and it is deliberate. It covers the history, the testing, going through the results with you on screen, and a written report to your GP.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You can book a hearing test directly. Many people do come through their GP, and Pooja sends a written report back to the GP afterwards, usually within a couple of days.

Which hearing aid brands do you fit?

Every major brand. Pooja is independent, which means she takes no commission from any manufacturer, so the recommendation is based on your hearing loss and your life rather than on who pays best that quarter. If a cheaper aid is the right one, that is the one you will be offered.

I have been told I need hearing aids before and I did not want them. Is that a problem?

No, and it is common. Plenty of people come back years after the first time someone suggested it. Nobody here will pressure you. You can have the assessment and do nothing with the result.

Can you see me if I cannot get to Braddon?

Pooja runs visiting clinics at Hawker, Conder and Yass, and she does home visits and aged care visits. Call and say where you are.

Do you bulk bill or take my health fund?

Candid Hearing is registered with the Hearing Services Program, NDIS, Medicare and WorkCover, and claims can be processed for the major health funds. Bring your card.

What if the hearing aids do not work for me?

For the first 30 days you can return them for a full refund, no reason required. Between day 31 and day 60 the Partner Test applies: wear them every day, and if the people closest to you cannot notice the difference, you get your money back.

One appointment tells you where you stand.

About two hours, a written report to your GP, and no pressure to do anything with the result. If you would rather start smaller, the quiz takes two minutes.
